Highlights of Central Tibet provides a wonderful opportunity to visit Lhasa, the capital and spiritual heart of Tibet, and its major cities, holy shrines, monuments, and to explore the fascinating cultural and religious aspects of Tibetan Buddhism and its people.
GRADE A (Easy) :
Touring with short day walks at medium to high altitudes that are suitable for people of all ages. No special physical preparation is required as this trip can be enjoyed by anyone who leads a fairly active life.
Arrive Kathmandu (1,337m/4,385ft)
Tour Kathmandu (Pashupatinath temple and Boudhanath stupa)
Fly to Gongkar and drive to Tsethang (3,550m/11,644ft), tour Yambulhakhang (oldest building in Tibet)
Day excursion to Samye monastery
Drive to Lhasa (3,600m/11,808ft) visiting Mindroling monastery en route. Later visit Jokhang and the Barkhor
Tour Lhasa (Potala palace, Norbulingka summer palace and Sera monastery)
Drive out of Lhasa to cross the Khamba La (4,970m/16,302ft) and Karo La (5,045m/16,548ft) passes to skirt Yamdrok Tso Lake and reach Gyantse (3,950m/12,956ft). Visit Kumbum stupa
Drive to Shigatse (3,850m/12,628ft) visiting Shula monastery en route. Tour Tashilhunpo monastery
Return to Lhasa by the northern route over the Dugu La (4,840m/15,875ft) and Shug La (5,300m/17,384ft) passes
Drive to Gongkar and fly to Kathmandu
Depart Kathmandu (if time permits optional Everest Mountain Flight – extra)
